Caitlin and I

Zanele Muholi’s Caitlin and I was used as the design for the mosaic studio’s second challenge to use a photographic work as a source to translate into stone. Caitlin and I is part of the Indawo Yami – Being series within which Muholi continues to explore implications of being black and homosexual through a range of different strategies. Being, a continuation of ongoing work, focuses on a quiet and tender celebration of love within the homosexual community, whether between mothers and sons, between lovers or friends. The triptych mosaic artwork was created in contemporary style with Venetian glass, ceramic elements, engineered, semiprecious and natural stone; in the direct method.

Artist Biography

Muholi completed an Advanced Photography course at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg and held her first solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2004. Her work has been included in exhibitions both locally and internationally.
